Nerja for all of your Costa del Sol Vacations

January 14th, 2012

Nerja has become one of the most popular resorts on the COSTA DEL SOL HOLIDAYS, located east of Malaga. Unlike many popular destinations from the west of Malaga to Gibraltar such as Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella, Nerja has escaped mass tourism and retains much of its charm and character as an old fishing village.
Nerja is located in the foothills of the Sierra Almijara which protects it from the worst of winter while providing a stunning backdrop to the city with rows of traditional stone and whitewashed houses. It is certainly one of the most beautiful destinations on the Costa del Sol. Only a 45 minute drive from Malaga International airport, flights are available from many European destinations and a regular bus service to coastal Nerja makes for an ideal holiday destination on the cheap.
The Balcon de Europa is the centre of the old town and offers spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and nearby beaches. It was originally called “La Bateria” thanks to the battery of cannons that have been stored there in a fortified tower. This tower was destroyed in 1810 during the Peninsula War by a British-led force to prevent an occupation by French troops. Today, the balcony is full of activities and entertainers, street performers, horse-drawn carriages and ice cream vendors. There are numerous bars and restaurants to and it offers an ideal place to relax and watch the sunset on the Mediterranean coast.
The old town of Nerja town itself has many buildings which still retain their original architectural style of Andalucia and the bustle of narrow streets create a genuine atmosphere of working Spanish town. Yet Nerja has all the advantages of a modern city with endless shops selling ceramics, textiles, leather products, souvenirs and accessories for the sea, a family essential.
Much of Nerja’s night life starts fairly late at night and you’re sure to find a bar to your particular taste, either in the lively Tutti Frutti plaza or quieter spots around the Balcon de Europa. Bars and clubs in Tutti Frutti plaza stay open until very early in the morning during the long hot summer nights and are especially popular with young holidaymakers. However, the bars near the Balcon are more conducive to the relaxed atmosphere of Andalucian life.
If you are happy to spend your relaxing holiday in Nerja, you can be sure that there are many beautiful sandy beaches nestled in coves, lined with bars and restaurants in abundance. Burriana beach is one of the largest and most popular with tourists and local Spanish alike, while the side of the Balcon itself has a small hidden cove where you can find on one of the most enchanting beaches of Nerja with golden sand and crystalline waters.
Less than 3 miles away are the famous Nerja caves, first discovered in 1959 and now one of the most popular tourist attractions in Spain. The caves have spectacular stalactites and stalagmites and the largest natural cave that has been transformed into an impressive concert hall, the location of many theatre productions of classical music. One of the most famous festivals is San Isidro in Nerja held each May 15th. A large procession of decorated carts leave the centre of the city heading towards the caves for a weekend of festivity and celebration, in true Andalucian style. The caves can be reached by local bus with regular service leaves from the bus terminal on the main avenue of Pescia.
The city itself offers many attractions for holiday visitors but if you feel that you need to check out some other places that Andalucia has to offer, it’s a perfect starting point for trips and excursions. Within a ten minutes you can get the beautiful whitewashed stone villages of Frigiliana and Torrox, as a bright white as snow in the sun. For the real snow, however, the Sierra Nevada is a great skiing venue in winter and only two hours away by car. Located at the foothills of the Moorish city of Granada, it is dominated by the mysterious Alhambra Palace, is a series of palaces and gardens built over different centuries, most notably under the Nazrid dynasty in the 14th century.
Nerja has become very popular for people retiring or simply looking for a change of life, with a fifth of the estimated population of 20,000 residents coming from overseas. During the summer months, this figure increases much more with the arrival of tourists attracted by the abundance of one of the best climates in Europe ideal for those COSTA DEL SOL HOLIDAYS. With the beaches, golf hollister outlet , skiing, amusement parks, water and mountains of Almijara within easy reach, Nerja has something for everyone.
